Description
As a HID firmware engineer working on many of Apple's input devices ( Keyboards, Trackpads, mice, pencils, etc ), you will be expected to:
Architect, implement, and maintain complex firmware designs
Write clean, easy to understand, robust, and sustainable code tailored for embedded systems
Bring up proof-of-concept prototypes and demos to help Design teams explore and evaluate new interactions
Help select microcontrollers and peripherals, define power management strategies, and review schematics with the Hardware team
Negotiate, specify and document communication protocols, system states, and feature requirements with Hardware and Software teams
Collaborate with the Quality Engineering team to inform and craft their white-box testing
Minimum Qualifications
- BS and a minimum of 3 years relevant industry experience
- Solid C or C++ coding ability for Embedded Systems
- Experience interfacing microcontrollers with analog and digital sensors
- Ability to apply software best-practices to firmware design in bare-metal or RTOS environments
- Proven capability in applying coding best-practices to firmware designs
- Working knowledge of one or more communication protocols (e.g., UART, I2C, SPI, USB)
- Proven board bring-up and debug skills
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines applied to consumer facing, software-enabled hardware products
- Independent work ethic with strong attention to detail
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Key Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with one or more microcontrollers cores ( ARM, AVR, MSP430, PIC, 8051 )
- Experience interfacing microcontrollers with sensors and actuators (e.g. LRA, VCA, Piezo) a plus
- Familiarity with embedded security concepts and practices such as Cryptography, Secure boot loading, etc preferred, not required
- Debugging skills with JTAG, SWD, Oscilloscopes, and Logic analyzers
- Some assembly experience is helpful

- At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $55.64 and $83.75/hr, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
